An Open Letter to the Borland Community
regarding Internet registration of Borland products

Starting with JBuilder 5 and Delphi 6, Borland is changing its product registration procedures. Formerly optional, registration is now required for these recently released products. We do not take this action lightly, and have kept paramount our respect for your time and privacy.

Our goal is to better serve you, our valuable customers. Registration helps us serve you in several ways:

  1. If you permit, we will use this registration information to focus our communication and relationship with you. As a registered customer, we can let you know about news, updates, patches, special offers, and other information only available to those who register.
  2. Understand characteristics of product use to help us build products that better meet your needs. For example, registration gives us an understanding of which operating systems a product is used on.
  3. Promote fairness of use by encouraging only licensed users to use Borland products.

Our Internet registration solution asks you to register when you first use the product. Even if you can't register immediately, a valid license key authorizes you to use the software. If you don't have an Internet connection on your computer, you can also register using a web browser on any computer. While it is easier and faster to register using the Internet, you can also contact your local Borland Customer Service department to register your product.

A few important points to note:

  • All that is required for registration is an email address, username / password, and the serial number / key combination that is included with the product. If you register using a web browser you will be sent an additional activation key by email.
  • You will be able to install the same product a sufficient number of times to allow for re-installation as long as you abide by the license agreement that is included with the product. This should handle the cases where you have to rebuild a hard drive, have multiple machines at work that you alone use, have a machine at work and at home.
  • There is no CD-ROM copy protection scheme used in our products.
  • Your privacy is protected. We use secure communication to transmit registration data.
  • You can opt-out of your registration information being used by Borland to contact you.
  • Registration information is related to our community database, but community membership is not required to register.

We look forward to having a closer working relationship with each of you.

Sincerely,

David Intersimone "David I"
Vice President Developer Relations
