Abstract: Summary of the installation steps focusing on known pitfalls

Question:

What is the procedure for installing MobileSet 1.03 to JBuilder 6?

Answer:

First, you must have JBuilder 6 installed and running properly. Once you are good to go there, follow the steps below:

  1. Go to http://www.borland.com/jbuilder/mobileset/ and click on the link that says Download JBuilder MobileSet now!
  2. Click the link for Download JBuilder MobileSet 1.03
  3. Follow the steps that appear. You will need to login to the community site and complete a short survey before you can download the software. Once finished, a download link will appear and the license keys for licensing MobileSet will be sent to the email address you specify.
  4. Once the download is complete, unzip the file and run the mobileset executable. This begins the installation procedure. If you have had JBuilder 5 on this machine, you may encounter trouble selecting the installation folder for MobileSet. If you do, please refer to this FAQ, http://community.borland.com/article/0,1410,28041,00.html, for a solution.
  5. Once installation is completed, go back to the MobileSet page to find links to vendors who distribute implementations of the J2ME SDK. Nokia, Siemens Mobile, and Sun Microsystems are listed.
  6. Unzip and/or run the installer for the J2ME SDK you chose. If you select all the defaults, the rest of this FAQ will make more sense. After the SDK is installed, you need to configure a JDK for it inside JBuilder. Select one of the next 3 steps depending on which SDK you chose.
  7. For Nokia: Go Tools | Configure JDKs | New. Click the elipses button next to the Existing JDK home path field, and browse to the ../Nokia_Emulators/Midp/Nokia_MIDP_Phone_Emulator_Beta_0.1 folder. Click this once and then click OK. Name the JDK something useful like 'Nokia J2ME' and click OK to exit the new JDK wizard. You should see 2 entries listed in the Classes tab. Click OK to finish the setup.
  8. For Siemens: Go Tools | Configure JDKs | New. Click the elipses button next to the Existing JDK home path field, and browse to the ../Siemens/SMTK/ folder. Click this once and click OK. Name the JDK something useful like 'Siemens J2ME' and click OK to exit the new JDK wizard. You should see 12 entries listed in the Classes tab. Click OK to finish the setup.
  9. For Sun Microsystems: Go Tools | Configure JDKs | New. Click the elipses button next to the Existing JDK home path field, and browse to the ../j2mewtk/ folder. Click this once and then click OK. Name the JDK something useful like 'Sun J2ME' and click OK to exit the new JDK wizard. You should see 22 entries listed in the Classes tab. Click OK to finish the setup.
  10. Once the JDK is configured, you can test that it has been installed correctly by going File | New Project... | Next, changing the JDK to your newly created J2ME JDK, and clicking finish. Now go File | New... | Micro. If the MIDlet and MIDP Displayable icons are enabled, the installation was a success!
